At 56, Graham wasn’t out of shape, but he was stuck in a routine. Running had once been a part of his life, but over time, motivation faded, and confidence in his ability waned. That changed when he joined ALM Fitness Club, where a group was training for The Wolf Run. The idea of tackling an obstacle course in the mud sounded completely out of his comfort zone.
“At first, I thought, I’ll run one at 56 and see how I get on,” he recalls.
That one decision, set him on a path he never expected.
Rediscovering the Love of Running
Graham’s first Wolf Run in Spring 2023 was more than just a test of fitness; it was an awakening. As he ran through the woods, climbed obstacles, and waded through water, memories of his younger self resurfaced.
“Running in the nature of the woods brought back memories of when I was a top cross-country runner at school for Halesowen,” he says.
But it wasn’t just nostalgia that hooked him. The experience of running through mud, surrounded by a supportive community, and conquering fears was exhilarating. The Wolf Run wasn’t about times or competition, it was about personal triumphs, teamwork, and the sheer joy of being outside.
Pushing New Limits
After crossing the finish line, he didn’t just feel accomplished, he felt alive. That first finisher’s t-shirt wasn’t just a souvenir; it sparked a new ambition.
“After getting my first Trilogy shirt, it made me want to run more races,” he says.
And he did. Now, at 58, he’s completed seven Wolf Runs and has set himself an incredible goal: 21 Wolf Runs by the time he turns 62.
His transformation hasn’t just been physical. The confidence and motivation he once lacked have returned, and he’s proving to himself (and others) that it’s never too late to take on something new.
“Don’t underestimate yourself,” he advises those considering their first Wolf Run. “Any fears you have about water, confined spaces, or heights—you’ll overcome them.”
Why He Keeps Coming Back
So, what makes The Wolf Run different from any other event? For Graham, it’s the atmosphere, the challenge, and the people.
“The whole setup is great. It’s well run and well organized. There’s hot food, drinks, and stalls selling unique products. But it’s the event itself that keeps me coming back.”
The camaraderie is unlike anything else. Whether it’s helping a stranger over a wall or sharing a laugh after an unexpected faceplant in the mud, the sense of community is what makes it special.
What Would He Tell His Pre Wolf Run Self?
Looking back, Graham has no regrets about taking that first leap. If he could speak to the version of himself that hesitated before signing up, he’d say:
“Don’t doubt yourself. It’s a fun run, and the experience you’ll get is fantastic.”
At nearly 60, he’s not slowing down.
“I’ll do as many as my body allows me to. It’s great fun, and great to be around people who need your help.”
Your Turn
Graham’s story is proof that age is just a number, self-doubt is temporary, and adventure is out there waiting. If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to do something like that, but…”…then this is your sign. There’s no perfect time to start, only the decision to say yes.
