At the age of 81, Stan Buteux officially became the oldest person to complete a Wolf Run, smashing the previous record of 73. And if you think this was just a tick on a bucket list, think again. This was a true example of how it’s never too late. A powerful reminder of grit, family, and the unstoppable benefits of staying fit for life.
This wasn’t a one off. In fact, Stan might be one of the fittest 81 year olds out there. He told us:
“I normally run half marathons and marathons. I started when I was 58 to keep fit.”
Stan’s motivation for taking on the Wolf Run? Running with his son.
“My son asked me to do it as he knows I wanted to do a run with him,” said Stan.
In the lead up to the Wolf Run, Stan focused his training on what he knows best, consistency and strength.
“I go to the gym every other day and do weights and the treadmill, press ups, pull ups… I focused on this for the Wolf Run.”
What makes Stan’s achievement even more remarkable is what he has overcome in recent years.
“Two years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and have had five operations since, to remove various growths, including one third of my right lung.”
Despite that, Stan hasn’t stopped running. He hasn’t stopped training.
“I’m not as fast as I was, not that I ever was, but I haven’t stopped.”
His sense of humour and humility shines through as he reflects on running with his son.
“My son is better than I thought he would be, and it was fun to run with him. He took longer to recover than me!”
Stan, your story truly show us the spirit of challenging yourself at any stage of life.
“I hope you can use this story to inspire others, as I believe in fitness and I’m so glad to have finished the event. I wear my Wolf Run T shirt with pride.”
Well, Stan, we tell your story with pride. You’ve inspired all of us to believe that fitness is for life and that adventure never comes with an age limit.
