There has been a huge rise in the Fitness and Mental Well-Being world recent years of outdoor fitness trends that connect people with nature while moving keeping fit. Wild swimming has already captured the imagination of countless fitness and outdoor enthusiasts across the UK, with its benefits for both physical health and mental clarity. But now, a new idea is here to stay. It’s wild running and it’s quickly becoming the movement everyone’s talking about.
So, what exactly is wild running, and how did it come to be?
What Is Wild Running?
At its core, wild running is about getting outdoors, leaving the paved paths behind, and embracing the raw beauty of nature. It’s not just about distance or speed. It’s about engaging with natural terrain, from muddy fields to rugged hillsides, running through forests, streams, and over obstacles that stimulate both the body and the mind.
While running has been a staple of fitness routines for decades, wild running has been a lost art. It was how our ancestors moved, not on pavements or paths, but across rugged ground, chasing food, escaping danger, and surviving in nature.
In modern times, we’ve lost that natural connection in running. Many of us now run on treadmills, along roads, or around neat playing fields. But wild running taps into something deeper, something primal.
The origins of Wild Running
At The Wolf Run, we’ve been championing this trend from the very beginning. In 2011 we used the term to extend the then-new movement of wild swimming, into running. We helped build the ethos and designed courses that truly embrace our vision. As a defined concept, wild running began to gain traction since and over the last decade more people searched for more adventurous, meaningful ways to challenge themselves in nature.
Our routes aren’t about smooth tracks or predictable terrain. They’re about crossing streams, climbing over obstacles, getting muddy, facing fears, and rediscovering that raw connection to the outdoors.
From day one, our goal has been to create something more than your average run. The Wolf Run is a full-body, full-mind experience. A chance to get out of the gym, off the grid, and into the elements, where every challenge is real, and every finish-line feeling is earned.
From solo runners seeking a personal challenge to corporate teams building camaraderie and resilience, the diversity of wild running participants ages and backgrounds reflects its growing appeal.
The Mental and Physical Benefits of Wild Running
Wild running is more than just a fitness trend. It is an experience that brings a host of mental and physical benefits.
Boosting Mental Health: Running in nature has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The natural surroundings promote mindfulness, giving you a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Building Strength and Endurance: Unlike running on pavement, which can be repetitive and taxing on your joints, wild running engages different muscle groups that often grow weak from lack of use.
Community and Teamwork: Running wild at The Wolf Run is also an incredibly social activity. Many participants take part in corporate groups, family outings, or with friends, making it an excellent way to bond with others. Those that run solo at our event often leave having connected with others.
Rewilding Your Routine: Perhaps the most profound benefit of wild running is the opportunity it offers to reconnect with nature. We spend so much of our lives indoors, but wild running reminds us of the beauty, power, and unpredictability of the natural world.
From the sights and sounds of the countryside to the feeling of mud squelching beneath your feet, it allows you to experience the world of running in a completely new way and encourages you to live life more adventurously.
